David Smalley (1940-2015) created sculpture for over five decades. Most of his works are in the medium of direct welded metal, stainless steel, bronze and aluminum. He also worked in glass, and many of his later works are composed of laminated wood. Many of his sculptures are kinetic.

Smalley had over 50 solo, two-person and invitational shows in the United States, England and Japan. He was represented by galleries in Connecticut, New York and Florida and maintained studios in Connecticut and Florida. He earned his MFA at Indiana University, and taught studio art at Connecticut College from 1965 until 2003.

His work is currently on display in a memorial exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, Connecticut.
